Tips For Building A Stone Fire Pit In The Backyard

You can make your own fire pit in the backyard with only few materials needed. To make a fire pit, get some stone slates, a bag of cement, a shovel, a poker and a metal cover (to keep the ashes blowing away from the wind and to protect the unit from the weather).

A natural fire pit is so much better than a gas fire pit because you can sit by the fire in the evening and have a nice mini-campsite in your own backyard. The fire will keep bugs and mosquitoes away and also the food tastes so much better when it is cooked on real fire.

So in order to make your own stone fire pit you need to get to the home improvement store and purchase lava rock slates or red bricks, metal cover and a poker at the least. You will also need a bag of cement to mix with water.

Tips on how to build a stone fire pit:

First, clear the area where you want to build it, remove any weeds, grass, twigs or debris and clean the area completely. Then get your shovel and dig a shallow hole at a medium size- the size of your fire pit. Select a spot that is not too close to the house or to bushes, shrubs and trees just as a precaution measure.

Then arrange the bricks in a circle and pour some cement on the bottom to cement them.

Mix the cement with enough water to make a nice smooth texture and paste the stone slates in a circle. You can make 2-3 layers depending on how tall you want your fire pit from the ground.

Let it sit and dry overnight for the cement to harden.

You can also put a stainless steel burner in the middle of the circle if you can find one that has a round shape. Otherwise, the lava rock slates will keep the fire in place in the fire pit. You can also add 1 or 2 river rocks in the middle of the fire pit which will raise the fire in the fire pot.

Put the metal cover on top of the fire pit after the fire is done to keep the ashes from blowing away.

You can also add an optional mosaic border on the outside of the stone slate fire pit just for decoration.

And finally, you can spread some gravel or small river pebbles on the outside and around the fire pit and you're done.

Also always keep a hose ready nearby just in case if you have to extinguish the fire.

Then you can put some fire logs in your newly build fire pit and enjoy a nice family gathering around the fire!

You can also add tiki torches on the sides to create even more fun and relaxing atmosphere for summer parties in the backyard.

A Royal Wedding? She's Been There

3 Apr 2011 at 12:00am  ''IT is dreadful,'' declared India Hicks, the model and former ''Top Design'' host, in a supremely proper English accent that made the phrase a symphony of syllables. She was sitting in a room at the Mark hotel on the Upper East Side, gazing out her window at rain squalls so thick they disguised the adjacent maze of apartment buildings. True to her...

THE FEMALE FACTOR; Female Expertise at the Drawing Board

7 Mar 2011 at 12:00am  LONDON -- It started a month ago when I was asked to compile a list of 20 designers who will influence design in the next decade with Paola Antonelli, senior design curator at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. After weeks of emailing ideas to and fro, the list was nearing completion and we scoured it for possible omissions. One worry was...
