1/ Stardoll.com
Ever wanted to style Rihanna or Hilary Duff?
Stardoll is the perfect place for making celebrity dolls and fashion dress up. It is easy to use, fun and has a huge amount of members from around the world. The dolls don't move but are nicely detailed and there's plenty of them. It's all in 2D which means you don't need to download any software and it's pretty fast to load.
Stardoll
Apart from just creating looks and accessorizing, you can do a lot of other things in the community like creating or joining a club, making a lookbook, chatting and entering competitions. Shopping is great and you can even buy virtual versions of DKNY and Vivienne Tam items! You can try creating fashions also, although you have to pay for their Superstar service in order to be able to save them or sell to others.
Stardoll is the biggest and one of the best sites in the Top 10 list and recommended especially for girls from around 7 to 11 years old.
2/ Girlsense.com
GirlSense is another online dress up site which is similar to Stardoll and also best for younger girls. You get your avi and can dress her up in a lot of fashions and accessories. The graphics are really nice and simple.
Girlsense
One of the best parts of the site is it's newly updated Girlsense Design Studio. Here you can create your own unique fashions - choose fabric, color and lots more - the level of control on what you can do is kinda scary! The Faceplace tool lets you really set the mood of your avatar through different expressions and facial features. Apart from designing there is also private and public chat on chatterbox.
Creativity is really valued in the community, probably more so than on Stardoll and it's a great place if you want to express yourself.
3/ Frenzoo.com
Frenzoo is a free site where you can design amazing fashions and 3D avatars.
The graphics let you zoom in, and your avatar moves, doing animated catwalk poses. You have to install a plugin, but you don't have to reload your Internet Explorer or Firefox which is nice.
Frenzoo
The best part about the site is that you can create your own 3D fashions and hairstyles - swimwear, elegant dresses, lingerie, gothic costumes, emo fringes anyone?
Frenzoo is better suited to teenagers and above, the minimum age of registration is 13.
4/ GoSupermodel.com
Gosupermodel is simple & fun site which has recently re-launched. Designed for younger girls, the site has a game theme, as you first play the part of the assistant as a designer fashion show, and must get all the models ready for the runway.
You can also skip the game and get straight into creation and the fashion system is simple but can produce nice results. Overall the avatars are fairly basic, but their style is fun and with its own personality.
GoSuperModel
The site uses Java which can seem to be a bit slow when changing between scenes, but if you're on a newer machine it should work just fine. Like Stardoll, this site is best for younger girls.
5/ Pupe.jp
Avatars from the land of kawaii?
Ok, so it's not in English but the styles of the avatars in this Japanese site are glamorous and cute. If you want to make an avatar which is totally sweet then this is the site for you - although be warned it's not that easy to register for from overseas.
YouTube Video
The graphic style is great - although the dolls don't move they are beautifully detailed, and it's always interesting to see what are the latest trends from Japan.
6/ MissBimbo.com
Yes, the name is quirky and "out there", and Miss Bimbo lives up to it's name.
Members can design their own bimbo, go shopping, create fashion and then the dodgy things: buying diet pills, getting breast enlargement surgery for your bimbo. It is one of the few fashion games out there that has taken this "copy reality" of celebrity lifestyles to the limit.
Miss Bimbo
So the site may not be the best role model, but it is popular for tween girls and it does have it's own blend of tongue-in-cheek humor. Enter at your own risk...
7/ i-dressup.com
As the name says, the site is all about dress up, with tons of mix-and-match games for girls. You can create your own Miley Cyrus if you like...
I-Dressup
The site is well designed and has a lot of features. When shopping, you can also customize some items, for example cropping a top or recoloring a skirt.
One special thing is that when you join, you actually get two avatars. One is a more realistic one called iLook, the other is more kawaii manga styled and called iToon. It's a nice touch letting you switch between more irl looks and fantasy themed styles.
8/ GroovyGirls.com
Groovy Girls is definitely best for a pre-teen set, with very young styled dolls and graphical style.
Groovy Girls
You can participate in chatting parties - safety is a big part of the site and the chat is limited to only a predefined set of conversations. Girls can also do up your "Mod Pod" and also design your own moves and go dancing with your friends. Overall the site is fun for young girls, however many of the best features are restricted to those with an "RSVP" code.
9/ BarbieGirls.com
If you're looking for one of the biggest and most popular sites for girls, you've found it in BarbieGirls. The site is professionally and looks great, well designed with its younger members in mind.
You can setup your Barbie Girl avatar, which has a unique cartoon style. Then proceed to go shopping, mix and match fashions, decorate your room with a range of furniture, visit the beauty salon and a lot more.
Barbie Girls
There are plenty of places to make friends and socialise, chatting is safe and moderated and you can even watch videos together with friends.
The only negative is that the experience for free users is a bit limited, all the best items need a paid VIP memberships, but anyway, it's a great site as you would expect from such a large and successful company.
10/ DressupChallenge.com
Like Frenzoo, this site is great for teens with more edgy and realistic styling.
Your avatar can be designed with tattoos, sexy or alternative clothes and accessories like guitars, and also be given a makeover.
Dressup Challenge
As the name sounds, a big part of the site is challenges, letting members battle each other in competitions, eg- punk rock chic, with the best in the community rising to the top and featured in the winners showcase. A new update to the site introduces fashion creation to add more variety to the community, which is a great alternative to some of the younger fashion games such as Stardoll or Girlsense.
11/ Nicotto.jp
Popular in Japan with teenage girls, Nicotto is a casual virtal world which mixes up doll avatars with the occasional neko cat :) The avatars are pretty fashionable and displayed in 2D, and can "walk" around nicely detailed environments and have fun doing various social functions - maintaining a home and garden, updating an in-world blog among others
YouTube Video
The site is popular in Japan but also has attracted some users from China, Korea and Taiwan, and comes from famous game developer Square Enix.
Ps - Hope it was helpful. If you have others you'd like to add to the list please make edits or send me a message with some details.
