How To Detail Your Own Car
Car detailing is quite an in-depth topic. It's not just about cleaning your car inside and out. Car detailing is time-consuming when done thoroughly. It is not just a surface cleaning or a cleaning concerned only with the areas that show. Car detailing is an absolute clean up program for your car. It is a job that can be done by either a car owner or a professional car detailer depending on the kind of money a car owner wants to put into his car. The other consideration is how much they know about car detailing and if they want to take the time to do all of the work involved in the process.
This article will address the car owner who wants to detail his own car. Because of certain limitations on the time and tools available to most car owners this how-to description will not go into the depth that is necessary to obtain the same results that a professional car detailer would. This focuses on how a car owner can make his car look almost as good as a professional job without the same time and effort that would normally be involved in a professional job. It is generally advisable to start with the interior of the car. Begin by removing the floor mats. I tend to clean the mats first because it will give them time to dry as I clean the rest of the car. It is a good idea to use some kind of carpet cleaner on the mats. I sometimes use a general purpose spray-on cleaner if I happen to be out of carpet cleaner. Because dirt tends to get ground deep into the fabric of the floor mats I will first slap them face-down on the driveway several times to knock as much fine dirt out of them as possible. I then spray the cleaner on them pretty liberally and use a brush to scrub them thoroughly. I will then use my hose and nozzle to spray them down and completely wash out all of the soap along with the dirt that was residing deep down in the fibers. Next, I hold the edge of the mat in my hand and swing it downward with as much force as I can to remove as much water as I can. I then hang them from the end so that the remaining water will drip out from gravity. A c-clamp works well to attach them to a deck railing or something similar, hanging them from the top end of the mat. The next step is to thoroughly vacuum the carpet and seats. Be sure to use a long narrow attachment to the vacuum so that you can get down into the spaces between the front seats and the console. Vacuum all of the little things that show up under the front seats. Also make sure you vacuum in the cracks in the seats. To do the best job, remove the bottom cushion of the back seat and vacuum all of the garbage that tends to work its way under there. If there are spots on the carpet, itself, use a carpet shampoo to deal with them. Unlike the mats, you do not want to get the carpet too damp. It can take quite awhile to dry unless you leave the car running with the heat on high. It is better to use a shampoo that will take care of the spots without getting the carpets excessively damp. If you have cloth upholstery, address any stains that may be showing by using one of the many upholstery shampoos available. You can buy these at K-Mart, Wal-Mart or any auto parts store.
