Pretty In Pink: Save Time And Money By Making Your Own Prom Dress

Besides having an obvious edge, originality and creativity over others, making your own prom dress can save you lots of money, and believe it or not, time as well.

Often girls search endlessly, store after store, in search of the "perfect dress." Having been to four proms and countless formal dances, I assure you that this "perfect dress" does not exist. Even when you find it, chances are the price tag will steer will away, or worse, the dress will come in every size but your own.

Here, I'll break down what exactly you need to buy to make a prom dress you'll love and can afford.

I no longer have the dress I made in high school and cannot find any pictures at the moment, but use your imagination.

Things to consider:

1. Time: Make sure you give yourself enough time from the date of the event to complete your dress. Typically the more detail in your design, the longer it will take. I recommend three months minimum.

2. Ideas: Try sketching or searching online for different patterns, colors, etc. that appeals to you. It's a lot easier to imagine your dream dress when it's on paper than in your mind. Think of aspects like where you want the bottom of the dress to fall, will it be a halter or strapless, etc.

3. Sewing Skills/Equipment: Sewing machines are most efficient, but if you can hand sew, just as well. Even if you "hire" someone else to do the sewing, this is an essential part of making the dress. Try looking for used machines in consignment shops.

Supplies Needed:
Sewing Machine/ Sewing Machine Needles
Tape Measure
Yardstick
Chalk Pencil or Erasable Marker
Pins/Pin Cushion
Iron/Ironing Board

Supplies to Consider (depending on your dress design):
Fabric (s)
Buttons
Thread
Zippers
Jewels/Rhinestones/Beads etc.
*Save time and head to craft store like Joeann's Fabrics or A.C. Moore, to get all of these supplies.

Process:

If possible, make a "mock" copy of the dress using a sheet or extra fabric. This will ensure fewer mistakes will be made later.

Using the "mock" fabric, try fabric on inside out, and have someone mark your measurements (bust, waist, hips etc.) Cut and adjust fabric according to these measurements.

Once the "mock" dress is correct, start on the real thing. Cut the real fabric according to your recorded measurements. Begin to sew.

Once dress is complete, start thinking details. Do you want beads along the neckline or rhinestones up the side? Would you prefer wearing jewelry to accent the dress instead? Would you like to dress up a plain color with a patterned patch, such as a pink star on the hip of a white dress? The details are the fun and easy part.

Tips:

Make sure you, or whoever is sewing your gown, is calm and in good spirits when sewing. I recommend clearing a room or small space, with no TV or nearby distractions. No food, drink or pets should be around materials.

Organizing materials in bins or cartons will help you to keep things straight.

Have fun!
