Birdhouses For Children To Make

Birdhouses are nice structures to build together with your children. They improve your kid's motor and creative skills as well as give them a better understanding of nature. Below are some ideas on simple birdhouses that your children can create.

1.
Milk Carton Birdhouse
"
This is the easiest birdhouse to make. Get an empty half-gallon milk carton. Wash and dry it thoroughly. Recluse the carton and staple it shut. Wrap the entire carton with 2" masking tape to cover the original design. Rub it with polish or color so that it looks like a tree bark. Create a hole in the side of the carton for the doorway. Using a sharp pen, poke several holes in the bottom of the carton for water drainage. Pierce a hole in the top of the carton for the string to pass through so you can hang it from a tree.

2.
Paper Mache And Balloons Birdhouse
"
To make paper Mache, boil strips of newspaper with 2 cups of flour for 30 minutes. Then layer the newspaper strips to the balloon. Make sure to leave a hole for a doorway. Once dry, pop the balloon and paint the paper mache with a bright color. Hang it in a tree for a bird to see.

3.
Old Garden Hat Birdhouse
"
Find an old straw hat. Tape the fabric to the bottom to make an enclosed structure. Create a hole in the side of the hat for the doorway. Suspend it from a tree and watch as birds fly to it and perch on the hat's rim.

4.
Nesting Shelf
"
Use any wooden shoebox-sized box without a lid to create an open birdhouse where birds can create their nests in. Just nail it to a tree, fence post or front porch.

5.
Nesting Cone for Doves
"
Doves do not like birdhouses and prefer to live in the open. However, they create very flimsy nests that can be quickly destroyed by wind and rain. To help them build a more secure nest, take a foot length finely mesh screen, wrap it into a cone shape and stabilize it with tiny pieces of wire. Place the nest high up in the tree so that the dove can see and recognize it.

If you have older children who can handle hammers, nails and glue, then you can create more varieties of birdhouses by looking for designs in the internet or your library. The state wildlife or provincial wildlife department or Boy or Girl Scout troupe can also offer free or inexpensive ready to use birdhouse patterned cardboards. You can simply fold them to create birdhouses. Commercial birdhouses are also available in stores. They usually come with pre-cut lumber, screws, and nontoxic paints. However, since these ideas would involve carpentry skills, they are more suitable for older children.

Bird watching is also a fun activity you can engage in with your kids. You can create a bird feeder in your backyard where you can throw feeds for birds to eat. This will generally attract a variety of birds to your yard.
