Free Celtic DesignsThe term free hand embroidery means many things to several people, and it's often a source of confusion. To most non-stitchers, it signifies any kind of needlework practiced with needle and thread upon a ground fabric. Because this encompasses needlepoint and counted thread ( cross stitch ) as well as free hand embroidery, it isn't difficult to see how misunderstandings arise. In addition in today's landscape there's also machine embroidery to add to the puzzlement.

As such it is used in various patterns from flowers, to celtic designs, to monograms. These characteristics make hand embroidery a natural choice for garment embellishment.

Hand embroidery falls into ( but is not limited to ) six major categories. Maybe the most opulent is silk embroidery, born in Asia ; its look is adaptable to cotton threads too. Crewel work using woolen threads hearkens back to Stuart Britain. Cutwork, in which the ground fabric is cut away for a lacy look, was perfected in 17th-century France. Shadow work, in which sheer fabrics show off the appearance of thread shadows, originated in India. Silk ribbon embroidery was invented to embellish the robes of noblemen in Louis XV's court.

Embroidery stitches can be grouped as flat, looped, chain, knotted, and composite. Combine them to make your fave pictorial images as well as abstract designs. If you're a beginner, try inexpensive cotton floss until you master a few stitches. After you gain confidence, why don't you try silk thread? This fiber deserves your attention as much as you deserve its beauty and luxury.
