Modern Kitchen Design
The best way to create a modern kitchen design that's right for you is to consult a kitchen designer. You can find them listed in the Yellow Pages under kitchens or online.
If you want to design your own kitchen or prepare for your consultation with a kitchen designer, here are a few basic steps to get you started. 1. Decide how you'd like your new kitchen to function. To decide this, you should know how many people use the kitchen, how often they use it, and the appliances and work areas used most often. You also need to decide whether the kitchen also serves as an eating area or as a family room, whether it has a hobby area, laundry area, pet-feeding area, or other uses. This will help you decide on the size of your kitchen and what areas of the kitchen need to be emphasized in your design. Be realistic about the size of the kitchen you want and the amount of money you can afford to spend. If money's no object, great; let your imagination run wild. But, if you're like most who have to live within limited means, keep a practical lid on your imagination. 2. Decide how long you plan to have your new kitchen. This will help you with other decisions. For example, if you plan a modern kitchen design for a quick sale of your home, appearance may be more important than durability. Begin your design with overall room layout. 3. Measure the space you have to work in. If it's a remodel you're considering, it's most cost-effective to restrict major appliances to the areas they're now located. It is possible to locate them elsewhere, but plumbing and electrical costs will be significant. If it's a new kitchen you're designing, begin by establishing a basic work triangle with your cooking area, sink and refrigerator as the corners of the triangle. (See story above for more detailed information.) 4. Traffic flow is another consideration. As part of your work triangle, estimate where most of the traffic flows. In locating the points of your triangle, try to put the point most used (the refrigerator or sink) at the entrance to the kitchen. At least, try to maneuver traffic from flowing through your triangle as much as possible. 5. Keep lighting in mind. Lighting -- natural and artificial -- is also part of a basic modern kitchen design. There's nothing like natural light in a kitchen to brighten things. Windows or skylights should figure prominently in your design.
