4-H Youth Education: A New Age Of Fun And Learning
The 4-H program today can help youth find fun, learn new things and prepare themselves for the future.
The old county fair, kids showing off their prized cows, horses and pigs. Stalks of grain and corn being shown to judges while moms and dads watch. Ribbons handed out for prize winning chickens, great tasting jams and fantastic pies. 4-H is no longer just livestock, farming and produce. Today 4-H tries hard and succeeds at making after-school, weekend, and summer programs fun for kids and families. "4-H is a club for young people (9-19 yrs old) sponsored by the Agricultural Extension Service to foster skills that develop self-esteem, problem-solving, personal development, and global understanding. The program encourages youth to explore science, technology, and citizenship. The 4-H's stand for Head, Heart, Hands, and Health." That is what you get if you ask google what is 4-H. In a nutshell, 4-H is a youth program where kids have fun and learn all kinds of important things. Starting at the younger ages, 4-H strives to get kids interested in fun activities in the areas of farming and farm related fields, arts & crafts, technologies, science, outdoor sports, the list goes on. 4-H is over one hundred years old but is constantly growing and changing with the times. If you look at some of the web sites for 4-H you'll see what I mean. In the past, 4-H centered around the farm and country. Now, it is so much more. For instance, a club in Moorhead Minnesota now has Lego robotics Mindstorm kits and kids along with parents are learning about the world of robotics, computers and programming. They compete against each other in tournaments where each group is given the same set of tasks for a robot to complete. Each group must then design, build and program their robot to complete the tasks. They learn not only computer skills but have fun doing so. Other fun and modern things kids are doing include, web site design, Flashplayer movie making, Global Positioning Satellite and Geographic Information Systems programs, and digital photography and video. For instance, this site is designed and run by 4-H youth. The site is for the National 4-H tech team. The tech teams are involved at county, state and national levels with technologies that youth can learn and explore for their future. The same can be said for other areas that 4-H members participate in. Clothing design, woodworking, electricity, aerospace and even Entomology (insect study), are areas that youth along with their parents can work on and explore. Not only for career exploration and preparation, other important things kids learn are leadership, citizenship and life skills. Club meetings, county meetings and events and camps are all conducted with youth as well as adult leaders. Youth have positions in the clubs from treasurer and secretary to president as well as county and national level positions on boards and committees. All these positions help kids learn their own key positions and help with skills they develop for a better future. National 4-H runs the national level events and help the state and county levels run and give direction for them to follow. Each club has input through their leaders and youth leaders and get to help run the whole organization. Clubs are run by their members with counties helping them along. Kids make decisions and parents and volunteers help them with what they want to do. Some clubs specialize in certain areas such as horses or dogs, while others are more for certain areas or towns.
