How to Design a T-Shirt Logo
Create Your Own Custom Design For Your Business, Event, Organization or YourselfSome designs that look good on paper are not particularly attractive for a T-shirt logo. A t-shirt is a movable canvas that is usually viewed in passing. T-shirt logos must therefore be clear and have obvious themes. This does not mean they must be void of complexity and creativity. Some imaginative designs make some of the most memorable t-shirt logos.Written by Kent Ninomiya
How to Design a T-Shirt Logo
The easiest way to design your own t-shirt logo is with Adobe Photoshop computer software. It allows you to import photographs, graphics or other images. You can then change the size, colors and dimensions. You can combine images, add text and embellish with borders and artwork. The tools offered by Adobe Photoshop allow you to do it all on your computer then save it to a JPG file. This makes it easy to e-mail it to a t-shirt printer. Of course, you can still design a t-shirt logo the old fashioned way and sketch it out on a piece of paper. However, since most t-shirt printing is done with computers these days, your t-shirt logo will need to be scanned into a computer and made into a digital file before it can be printed.![]() |
| Keeping the Subject Obvious and Clear |
Design the T-Shirt Logo Graphics
Start with the primary subject of your t-shirt logo. This can be a picture, a drawing or giant letters. It should be the biggest thing in your logo. This is where you want to draw the eyes of the people who see your t-shirt. Keep the logo simple and straight forward. If it is for a business that customizes trucks, show a truck. If it is for a soccer team, show someone with a soccer ball. If it is a spoof, make sure it is obvious what you are spoofing. Make the primary design big and bold with distinct lines. Intricate details often can not be seen when the logo is transferred to a t-shirt. Use Adobe Photoshop to import photographs or graphics then use the tools to change the image to your taste. If you are using graphics downloaded off of the Internet, make sure that you are not infringing on any copyrights.![]() |

Select the T-Shirt Logo Colors
The choice of colors is important when designing a t-shirt logo. The point of a logo is to attract attention. The colors should therefore be eye grabbing with high contrast. Similar colors like blue and purple will look the same when placed next to each other. Contrasting colors like yellow and black will stand out side by side. When a logo is transfered to a t-shirt, the colors are not always exactly the same as the original logo. Safe primary colors will remain more consistant than subtle pastel shades. The logo colors may also look very different when placed on a different colored t-shirt. Since your logo may end up on several different colored t-shirts, try to use colors that will work with any background. Also, avoid using too many colors or your logo may end up looking like a pizza with everything on it. Three or four colors are more than enough for a typical t-shirt logo.![]() |
| Keep Text Font Clear and Readable |
Select the T-Shirt Logo Text Font and Size
It is more important for the words on your t-shirt logo to be clear than it is for them to be fancy. A stylish font is no good if no one can read what it says. Choose an easy to read font with bold outlines that can be read at a distance. Choose a font size as big as possible for your design. Bigger is always clearer. Just don't let the words get so big that they overwhelm the primary subject in the t-shirt logo design. Place the text around the primary subject to frame it. If the words are the primary focus of the t-shirt logo, place them in the center and use the rest of the design to frame the words.Fine Tune the T-Shirt Logo Layout
Take a look at your t-shirt logo design and see what pops out to you first. Is it the impact that you are going for? Show the design to several people who have never seen it before and ask them what they see first. If they don't "get it" or have trouble visualizing your point, make adjustments. Remove, shrink or de-emphasize some design elements while making your primary subject and words clearer and more prominent. Once you are happy with your t-shirt logo design, print it out to the size that would be on a t-shirt. Lay it across the chest or back of someone wearing a t-shirt. See how it looks when hugging the contours of a body. Sometimes elements of your design will not be flattering when wrapped around a person in three dimensions. If this is the case, more adjustments are needed.
Prepare the T-Shirt Logo for Printing
Most companies that print t-shirt logos do it using computers. They require that you submit your t-shirt logo design in a digital format. If you created your logo on Adobe Photoshop, e-mail it to the company as a JPG file attachment. If you designed your t-shirt logo on paper, scan it into a computer and e-mail the scan. Check the colors of the scan to make sure they are true to your design.![]() |

Select a T-Shirt Printing Company
There are many companies that will print your t-shirts for you using your own design. Some will even help you create your t-shirt logo if you have an idea but don't feel like doing it yourself. For a small fee they will customize one of their existing designs for you. For a few hundred dollars, a professional graphic artist will design your logo from scratch. Here are a few of the companies that will print your t-shirt logo:
